Mr. Conwell has been involved as an architect providing programming and design services for 43 years. He is a licensed Architect in California and holds a National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB) certification, which allows for reciprocity in any of the states. He is also an active member of the AIA, International Facility Managers Association (IFMA), and teaches periodically at the New School of Architecture and UCSD Extension.
Early in his architectural career, Mr. Conwell was a chief project designer with Charles Luckman & Associates, an internationally known architectural firm in New York and Los Angeles. He continued as a chief designer for San Diego’s Deems Lewis and Partners.
Walt founded Conwell+Marshall & Associates in 1983 which became Conwell Shonkwiler & Associates in 1995 and transitioned to Walt Conwell Architect, Inc., at the beginning of 2006. As principal and lead designer, he has developed a history in San Diego of providing architectural design services, site planning analysis, and facility planning for large Fortune 500 corporations in San Diego and Texas. These include Solar Turbines, Inc. (a division of Catapillar), McDonnell Douglas, Jack in the Box, and Scientific Atlanta. More recently, Walt provided design services for three Karl Strauss Brewery restaurants. His design history also includes educational facilities and design coordination efforts for local municipalities.
